Description
CareFlex MultiAdjust Specialist Seating Chair
The CareFlex MultiAdjust is a highly adjustable specialist seating chair designed to provide postural support, pressure care and comfort for children and adults with mild to moderate seating requirements.
Available in Small and Medium sizes, the MultiAdjust combines Tilt-in-Space, Back Angle Recline, an elevating leg rest, adjustable foot support and integral seat width, depth and arm-height adjustment. Its tool-free design makes it particularly adaptable for individual users whose needs may change over time, as well as multi-user environments such as community equipment services, hospitals, care homes and rehabilitation settings.
A pressure-redistributing Reflexion® foam seat cushion is supplied as standard, together with a supportive foam back and Vapour Permeable material in contact areas. Manual, Pro-Control and fully motorised adjustment options are available, allowing the chair to be configured around the individual user and care environment.
With removable armrests, four braked castors, a modular construction and an extensive range of positioning accessories, the CareFlex MultiAdjust provides a versatile specialist seating solution for semi-ambulant and non-ambulant users.
Highly Adjustable Specialist Seating
The MultiAdjust has been designed around flexibility. Key seating dimensions can be altered to provide an appropriate fit for the individual rather than requiring the user to adapt to a fixed chair.
Adjustable elements include:
- Seat width
- Seat depth
- Armrest height
- Footplate height
- Footplate angle
- Back angle
- Tilt angle
- Leg-rest position
Adjustment mechanisms are designed to be tool-free where appropriate, with clear indicators inside the arms helping carers and clinicians achieve consistent settings. This makes the MultiAdjust particularly useful where seating requirements need to be reviewed or changed over time.
Tilt-in-Space
The CareFlex MultiAdjust features Tilt-in-Space (TiS) as standard. Tilt-in-Space changes the orientation of the complete seating system while maintaining the relationship between the user's hip and knee angles.
This can help:
- Redistribute body weight
- Support pressure management
- Manage fatigue
- Provide periods of rest
- Alter orientation
- Maintain postural support during repositioning
- Improve comfort during prolonged sitting
The standard factory Tilt-in-Space range is approximately 0° to 35°
An alternative configuration of approximately -5° to 30° is also available.
Back Angle Recline
Back Angle Recline (BAR) is also standard. Unlike Tilt-in-Space, Back Angle Recline changes the angle between the seat and backrest, altering the user's hip angle.
The MultiAdjust provides a Back Angle Recline range of approximately 95° to 135°. This allows the hip position to be adjusted according to the user's posture, comfort and functional requirements.
Tilt-in-Space and Back Angle Recline can therefore provide complementary positioning functions within the same specialist chair.
Pressure-Redistributing Reflexion® Foam Seat Cushion
The standard MultiAdjust incorporates a pressure-redistributing Reflexion® foam seat cushion. The cushion is designed to provide a comfortable and supportive seating surface while contributing to pressure management for people with limited mobility. Black Vapour Permeable material is used in contact areas to further support the seating environment. For users with increased pressure-care requirements, alternative pressure-management options are available within the wider MultiAdjust range.
Reflexion Foam Flat Back
A Reflexion Foam Flat Back is provided as part of the standard MultiAdjust specification. The flat back provides straightforward postural support for users who do not require the additional shaping of a specialist contoured or Waterfall back. Where greater trunk accommodation or lateral support is required, alternative back systems can be considered as an upgrade.
Integral Seat Width Adjustment
The MultiAdjust incorporates integral seat width adjustment, allowing the chair to be configured around the user's body dimensions.
The Medium MultiAdjust provides an inner seat-width adjustment range of approximately 400–550 mm / 16–21 inches across two cushion sizes.
Correct seat width is important because excessive width may reduce effective lateral support, while insufficient width can cause discomfort and unwanted pressure.
Integral Seat Depth Adjustment
Seat depth can also be adjusted to provide appropriate thigh support and pelvic positioning. The Medium MultiAdjust provides a substantial adjustable seat-depth range, allowing the chair to accommodate users of different body proportions.
Appropriate seat depth can help:
- Support the thighs
- Position the pelvis against the backrest
- Improve sitting stability
- Avoid excessive pressure behind the knees
- Improve overall comfort
Integral Armrest Height Adjustment
The height of the armrests can be adjusted to better match the user's upper-body dimensions. For the Medium chair, the arm-height adjustment range is approximately 200–250 mm / 8–10 inches. Correct arm support can contribute to improved upper-limb comfort, shoulder positioning and overall postural stability.
Removable Side Arms
The MultiAdjust has fully removable armrests. This is particularly useful for users requiring:
- Lateral transfers
- Assisted transfers
- Sling application
- Sling removal
- Personal care
- Improved side access
Removing the armrest allows access from either side of the chair.
The user's transfer method should always be established through an appropriate moving-and-handling assessment.
Elevating Leg Rest
An elevating leg rest is standard on the MultiAdjust. The leg-rest position can be adjusted to provide lower-limb support and to accommodate different seated positions. The standard knee-angle range is approximately 65° to 135° Alternative configurations are available depending on whether the chair uses manual or motorised controls.
Appropriate leg-rest positioning should be determined according to the user's posture, range of movement, comfort and clinical requirements.
Height-Adjustable Footplate
The footplate can be adjusted for different lower-leg lengths. On the Medium MultiAdjust, the approximate seat-to-footplate height adjustment is 350–500 mm / 14–20 inches This substantial range allows the lower-leg support to be configured around the individual.
Angle-Adjustable Footplate
The footplate is also angle adjustable. Four ankle-angle positions are available:
- 75°
- 90°
- 105°
- 120°
This allows the chair to accommodate different foot and ankle positions, including users presenting with foot drop or fixed plantar-flexion angles. Where appropriate, the footplate may also be configured towards a more neutral foot position.
Flip-Up Footplate
The footplate can be flipped up when it is not required. This can improve access during transfers and make it easier for an appropriate semi-ambulant user to approach or leave the chair.
Manual, Pro-Control or Fully Motorised
The CareFlex MultiAdjust is available with three control configurations.
Manual
The chair's positioning functions are operated manually using the appropriate controls.
Pro-Control
The Pro-Control option provides powered operation of the:
- Leg rest
- Tilt-in-Space
Other appropriate functions remain manually operated.
Fully Motorised Option
A fully motorised configuration is also available. Powered operation can be particularly useful where frequent positional changes are required or where manual operation would be difficult for carers.
The most appropriate configuration should be established during assessment.
Available in 2 sizes
The MultiAdjust is available in Small and Medium sizes. This enables the range to accommodate users of different shapes, sizes and ages, including both children and adults.
Selecting the appropriate chair size and adjusting it correctly are fundamental to achieving effective postural support.
Suitable for Children and Adults
The MultiAdjust's Small and Medium size options allow it to be considered for both children and adults. Its extensive adjustability can be particularly useful where the user's body dimensions or requirements do not suit conventional fixed-dimension seating.
Regular review is recommended for growing children and users whose needs are changing.
Designed for Semi-Ambulant and Non-Ambulant Users
The MultiAdjust can be considered for both semi-ambulant and non-ambulant users.
- For semi-ambulant users, the removable arms and flip-up footplate can help facilitate appropriate transfers.
- For non-ambulant users, removable arms provide improved access for assisted transfers and sling application.
Suitable for Neurological and Neuromuscular Conditions
The MultiAdjust may provide an appropriate specialist seating solution for individuals living with neurological or neuromuscular conditions.
Examples include:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Motor neurone disease
The appropriate seating solution should be selected according to the person's individual presentation rather than diagnosis alone.
Suitable for Orthopaedic Conditions
CareFlex also identifies orthopaedic conditions among the potential applications for the MultiAdjust.
Its adjustable seat dimensions, recline, foot support and lower-limb positioning provide flexibility when accommodating individual orthopaedic requirements.
Suitable for Cardiovascular Conditions
The MultiAdjust may also be considered for users with cardiovascular conditions where specialist supportive seating and positional changes are required. Specific clinical requirements should be established by an appropriate healthcare professional.
Suitable for Frail and Older People
For frail and older people who require greater support than a conventional armchair can provide, the MultiAdjust offers an adaptable specialist seating solution. Its pressure-redistributing cushion, positioning functions and adjustable dimensions can be configured around the user's individual requirements.
Four Braked Castors
The MultiAdjust is fitted with four braked castors. These allow the chair to be positioned or moved within an appropriate indoor environment while providing a stable seating platform when the brakes are applied.
Appropriate moving-and-handling procedures should always be followed when portering an occupied specialist chair.
Modular Construction
The MultiAdjust features a modular design. Individual chair sections can be dismantled, simplifying transportation and potentially making it easier to negotiate restricted access. The modular construction also improves access to individual components and the frame for cleaning.
This provides benefits including:
- Easier chair transportation
- Easier access through narrow passages
- Improved cleaning access
- Interchangeable accessories
- Easier configuration
- Suitability for community equipment services
Ideal for Community Equipment Services
The MultiAdjust is particularly well suited to community equipment and loan services.
Its combination of:
- Tool-free adjustment
- Small and Medium sizes
- Wide adjustment ranges
- Modular construction
- Interchangeable accessories
- Manual and powered configurations
allows a chair to be configured for different individual requirements.
This versatility can also be useful in other multi-user healthcare environments.
Optional Adjustable Laterals
Adjustable lateral supports are available where additional trunk support is required. For the Medium MultiAdjust, different configurations provide varying lateral-width ranges. Options include Narrow, Regular and Wide configurations, allowing the lateral supports to be positioned according to the user's trunk dimensions.
Optional Contoured Back
A Contoured Back is available as an upgrade where greater trunk support is required. The shaped pads provide gentle lateral feedback and help centralise the user's posture.
Optional Waterfall Back
A Waterfall Back can also be specified. Its configurable soft-filled cushions can accommodate different spinal shapes, including kyphotic and lordotic postures, while supporting the spine and reducing concentrated pressure around prominent curves.
Optional WaterCell Technology
Users requiring enhanced pressure management can upgrade from the standard Reflexion foam cushion to CareFlex WaterCell Technology. WaterCell Technology is supplied as standard on the MultiAdjust Plus but can be selected as an upgrade for the standard MultiAdjust.
Optional Dynamic Air Cushion
A Dynamic Air Cushion is also available for users with higher pressure-care requirements. The most appropriate cushion should be selected following an individual pressure and postural assessment.
Positioning Accessories
The MultiAdjust can be configured with a comprehensive selection of accessories to meet individual requirements.
Available options include:
- 4-point padded pelvic belt
- Padded pelvic belt
- Adjustable lateral supports
- Chest harness
- Groin harness
- Contoured back
- Waterfall back
- Dynamic Air Cushion
- Flip-down pommel
- Pommel
- Lateral head supports
- Soft headrest
- Soft profiled headrest
- Tray
- Alternative pressure-care options
Positioning accessories should be selected according to assessment rather than automatically added to every chair.
Maximum User Weight
The Medium MultiAdjust has a maximum user weight of 160 kg / approximately 25 stone
The appropriate chair size and configuration should always be confirmed for the intended user.
